Research Interests

Our research group is focusing on the applications of nanotechnology in electronic microdevices. We have expertise in the theory, numerical simulation, fabrication, and characterization of electronic devices. Our group is engineering materials, structures, devices, and complete systems for applications in computing, physical, biological, and chemical sensing. A large portion of our experimental research involves the application of printing methods, such as inkjet micropatterning for fabricating microdevices using functional organic and nano-composite based inks. Our theoretical and simulation research covers a broad range from quantum mechanical atomistic calculations to macro scale finite-element modelling. Specifically, we are interested in:

- Sensing devices based on polymers and nano-composites
- Sensing device fabrication using inkjet micropatterning
- Molecular quantum-dot cellular automata (QCA)

Prospective Graduate Students

Our research group is looking for excellent graduate students to work in the areas listed above. Research Projects

Printed Sensing TechnologyOur research group is developing a variety of sensing devices fabricated using inkjet printing. We are exploring physical and chemical sensing technology for applications in air quality monitoring, structural health monitoring, breath analysis, and other important applications.
MRI Microflow VisualizationThe goal of this project is to design and construct a portable and cost effective magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) instrument that is capable of resolving features at microscale to image flow fields of complex fluids in capillary tubes.Schematics of MRI for Flow Visualization Instrument
Molecular Quantum Cellular Automata Molecular Quantum Cellular Automata (QCA), is an exploratory computing paradigm in which information is encoded in the electronic charge configuration of a QCA cell (built from one or two individual molecules). The charge interaction between neighbouring cells enables the transmission and processing of information. Our research focus is on the design and simulation of QCA using numerical tools such as the QCADesigner tool developed in our lab. QCA processor designed using QCADesigner
Modeling of carbon nanotube-based biosensorsWe are studying the properties of carbon nanotube (CNT) biosensors using numerical simulation. The research is focusing on the electronic transport through CNTs that are exposed to various amino acids and short peptides. Using a combination of molecular dynamics, density functional theory, and quantum transport calculations we are able to predict how the adsorption of these peptides affects the transport through the tubes.
