Our group uses integrated microsystems to probe the biology of cells and molecules. Our current research focuses in two areas, affinity reagent selection and detection of bacterial pathogens. Integrated microfluidics consisting of etched glass channels and microchambers with PDMS microvalve technologies allow for adaptable systems capable of performing complicated assays in a fraction of the time of conventional systems. Our eventual goal is to use such microsystems to define, probe, and predict biological networks of complex diseases by simultaneous detection of many facets of cell biology in parallel.

Research Projects
Microfluidic electrochemical sensors for early detection of prostate cancer By integrating multiple molecular biology assay steps on a single microfluidic platform, we aim to detect the activity of telomerase, an enzyme upregulated in prostate cancer cells. This will hopefully provide detection of prostate cancer than currently possible, and demonstrate better specificity for cancer than prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests.
Detection and characterization of pathogenic bacteria Electrokinetic methods for isolation, concentration, and purification of pathogenic bacteria from complex media. Fabrication of integrated microfluidics for front-end purification followed by genetic and immunological characterization.
Microfluidic aptamer selection We are developing integrated microfluidic systems for the rapid and high-efficiency selection of nucleic acid aptamers.
